How we simplified travel restrictions with Covid Entry Check and why it’s a valuable tool for travellers.

Imagine if you were stranded abroad and you can’t go home? What would you do?

As the world is cautiously taking steps towards recovery in the wake of COVID-19, travel remains one of the sectors fraught with uncertainty and stress. Domestic travel may be resuming in various parts of the world, but international travel is a different story altogether.

We quickly realised that travel restrictions were incredibly hard to navigate, with no central information bank of sorts for travellers. Here, we take a deep dive into the insights that led us to create Covid Entry Check.

Who is Covid Entry Check for?

When building the tool, we first considered those who had the immediate need to travel, such as:

  • Citizens and permanent residents stranded abroad
  • Professionals and students with expiring visas
  • Returning expatriates
  • Other reasons – Diplomatic passes, Family of Citizens, Military or Health workers

2 weeks later, Covid Entry Check was ready for every traveller and just as useful. We centralised travel restrictions for over 200 countries, tracked more than 65,000 travel routes and monitored over 250 travel advisory websites. All this to help every traveller save time spent on hours of research.

The Problems

It’s hard to keep track of travel restrictions.

Even now, travel bans and the status of border controls can change at any moment, depending on the COVID-19 situation in every country.

For example, the Maldives is currently open to tourists. However, depending on your country of origin, passport or work pass, a return trip may not be possible, and your beach vacation could turn into a one-way trip.

Lack of a central travel advisory.

Not all official government websites provide information on entry requirements in a consolidated manner.

If you wish to enter Singapore, information on cross border travel is spread across 2 different government bodies, and 4 different websites. In comparison, Japan provides all information on a single page on the tourism board website.

Lack of standardised travel rules or protocols.

Every country has different standards for bilateral travel, safety and testing. Are PCR tests required prior to travel? Is there a mandatory quarantine, and for how long? Are you allowed to travel for work, and is proof of business required? There are simply no internationally agreed-upon rules.

Our Solutions

We simplify complex information.

With official government websites, information is mostly in loose articles in PDF formats that are not user-friendly. We compile all the data into simple status updates and digestible, user-friendly points, so you can get a clear overview of what the situation is.

We allow users to subscribe to selected routes.

With Covid Entry Check, you can subscribe to updates on individual routes, and get travel statuses sent directly to your inbox. This way, you can spend your time and effort on other things that matter.

As Covid Entry Check gains more momentum among travellers, we hope to work on more exciting updates and features like listing COVID-prepared hotels and flight providers, and prioritising data accuracy for popular routes.
